The Genron NPO is a certified non-profit membership organization, which relies entirely on donations from individuals, corporations and foundations. Genron NPO does not receive any financial support from the government.

The Genron NPO has been designated a specified public-interest corporation under Japan's Income Tax Law, and therefore, donations made to The Genron NPO are eligible for favorable tax treatment and income tax deductions or refunds.

As of 2009, only 93 out of about 37,000 NPO organizations have been designated a certified public-interest corporation. The Genron NPO was designated as such on June 1, 2005, as Japan's 34th organization of its kind.
